Omis, Croatia – Quiet day by the sea

The tour guide of the Blue Line tour was from Omis, a small seaside town less than an hour away by public bus from Split’s city center. For the princely sum of 4 euro round trip (2 if you buy ahead of time), the 60 bus whisks you away from the chaotic ferry terminal to a smaller, quieter yet still charming seaside town.

The bus trip to Omis is beautiful. It reminded me of driving on PCH in the states and there are small hamlets dotting the route with parks, beaches and small campgrounds designated “autocamp” areas.

I got off on the last stop along with most of the bus and wandered onto a side street. Much like Trogir, the smooth sandstone cobblestones lead to narrow throughways with multiple side passages.

As I tend to do, I didn’t get up on time for breakfast so my first stop was lunch before I explored.

This lavish feast included enough spaghetti bolognese for three people to share, a delicious octopus salad I was given in error instead of my standard tossed salad and a full bread basket of bread still warm from the pizza oven. Along with my standard coke zero, this set me back 19 euro with tip and could have easily served two.

Now that I could concentrate on sightseeing, I made a beeline for the bay, stopping to admire yet another giant easter egg along the way.

Omis features both land and sea adventures, including hiking, river rafting, repelling along with water based sports.

For such a small town, the number of boats moored around the town was impressive.

On the other side of the harbor was a large beach with sunbathers and swimmers enjoying the spring day.

The water was the intense teal green that comes from the high mineral content as it rolls down the granite mountains.

At the edge of the park and before I reached the return bus stop, I noticed a statue with kids handprints, but there wasn’t an english translation. The copper had a deep green verdigris, almost matching the crystal clear water behind it.

I checked prices on Booking.com and a sea-facing fully furnished one bedroom apartment was 70% the cost of what I paid in Split. If I come back to the Dalmatian coast, I may consider Omis vs Split as a quieter way to enjoy the water.
