The first of our Christmas excursions was to the Black Magic Black Balsam shop. Black Balsam is a popular liquor and figures prominently throughout town as well as the Christmas Market. They also sell custom chocolate hand made in the same storefront.

The top floor has the alchemy materials used to invent the liquour and a small candy counter with unique chocolates, such as the ruby one I purchased after Santa. We had to enter a very steep, very dark stairwell for the demo.

The guide gave the full rundown of the development of Black Balsam, which contains 24 different herbs and is finished in oak, which turns it from a rich amber to a black liquid. The original is 45% proof and they have a “kid’s version” that is flavored with black currant.

As a fun end, Santa came to visit our group and stayed for pictures.

Such a neat shop! Make sure Santa doesn’t have any of that 45% stuff on Christmas Eve–he’s got a sleigh to drive.
LOL almost a dad joke!
