Salona Archaeological Park, Croatia – Riding the Blue Line Stop 2

Next stop on the Hop On, Hop Off Bus in Split is Salona, an active roman dig slightly up the mountain from Split.

There were posters scattered around the dig with QR codes where you could visualize what the settlement looked like back in the day, but I can’t capture that here.

As rubble is sorted through and larger pieces are removed from the ground, they are thoughtfully placed around the center. This is a partial Roman tomb unearthed near the entrance.

As you pass the excavation site, you come to a building that keeps the records.

Once you get up close you can see ancient writing around the door.

Turn the curve and you are in a beautiful garden area. Locals were enjoying picnic lunches as their children ran through the area and tested the fountain.

You then enter the larger part of the park. A steep incline leads to an area of the outer walls.

As I clambered by I noticed a piece of aqueduct. It’s hard to tell in the picture but the water would pass the various stone features, which would collect sediment and then there are openings where the water would course down to the next piece of aqueduct. There is a piece of aqueduct on the road to Solane that was still in use until the 1920s.

One of the main attractions is at the end of a mile walk, the ampitheater.

As I turned back, I could see more rubble that had been removed so we could enjoy what lay beneath.

I was definitely getting my steps in on this Blue Line tour!
